Shoplifting and abuse are a cost, not an occasional event.
Retail crime in the UK runs into the billions of pounds a year, and the British Retail Consortium reports that violence and abuse against shop staff has climbed sharply. A permanent fit-out is slow and expensive, and a dummy camera deters no one. The Vigil 600 gives a store a real, visible deterrent it can have standing on the floor this week.
UK shoplifting is at its highest level on record.
These are public figures from the British Retail Consortium, the Office for National Statistics and police forces — the reason a visible deterrent on the floor earns its place.
Cost of customer theft to UK retailers in a single year, part of a £4.2bn total retail crime bill.
BRC Crime Survey 2025Police-recorded shoplifting offences in England & Wales (year to March 2025) — the highest since records began in 2003.
ONSIncidents of violence and abuse against retail staff — up around 340% since 2020.
BRC Crime Survey 2025Shoplifting offences that result in a charge or summons — most are closed with no suspect identified.
ONS, 2024A small group of prolific offenders drives much of the loss. In London alone, just 104 repeat shoplifters were linked to roughly a third of all shop-theft offences where a suspect was identified, and the Ministry of Justice has found shoplifters reoffend more than any other type of offender. The same faces come back — so a store’s best defence is being a visibly harder target than the shop next door, with recorded evidence when it is needed.

Retail security FAQs.
Can the Vigil 600 be used inside a shop or retail unit?
Yes. The Vigil 600 is a compact, free-standing unit designed to sit inside or at the entrance of a premises — on a shop floor, in a stockroom, or covering a doorway or forecourt. It needs no wall fixings and nothing is cabled in, so it can be positioned where the risk actually is and moved if that changes.
How is the Vigil 600 powered — does it need wiring or broadband?
You have the choice. The Vigil 600 can be hard-wired to mains power where the premises has a spare supply, or run on solar and battery where it does not — so it suits a staffed shop with a socket to spare and an empty unit with none alike. Either way there is no network cabling and no shop broadband to arrange, because connectivity is mobile and built in. That is what lets it go live the same visit rather than waiting on an install.
How quickly can it be deployed in a retail premises?
Usually the same day or within 48 hours of an agreed quote across Hampshire and the South of England. The unit is delivered, positioned and switched on in one visit — useful when a store has had an incident and needs cover now.
Does it deter shoplifters, or only record them?
Both. A visible camera unit on the shop floor does deterrent work the moment it is seen, and its motion detection with photo verification and built-in siren can challenge someone out of hours. When a theft does happen, it is recorded so you have evidence rather than just an empty shelf.
Can it be monitored out of hours when the shop is closed?
Self-managed alerts to your phone are included as standard. Professional 24/7 monitoring, with a person verifying events and an audio challenge, is an optional add-on — so an overnight-empty unit can have a control room watching without you paying for one you do not need.
How much does retail CCTV hire cost?
The Vigil 600 starts from £89 per week plus VAT, with 24/7 monitoring available on top. There is no minimum hire period, so a short-term or seasonal shop is costed for exactly the weeks it needs. See the hire and pricing page for the full breakdown.
Can footage be shared with police or used against shoplifters?
Yes. Recorded footage can be downloaded and shared with police or your insurer after an incident. A visible, recording unit also supports a store's wider loss-prevention and staff-safety case in a way a mirror or a dummy camera cannot.
